Quick Sip - Derby de Mayo
Though I may have uprooted from my native Bluegrass State for the gray
asphalt of Brooklyn, I still pony up one heck of an annual Kentucky Derby Day
party - complete with mint juleps, burgoo (a traditional Derby stew –
though I leave out the squirrel meat), and prizes for over-the-top
hats. But my parents, who still live in the Kentucky house where I grew
up? They celebrate Cinco de Mayo with all their neighbors.
Seeing as both fiestas fall on the same Saturday in '07, I think it's
high time for a run at some cultural cross-over. Olé and giddy-up!
Tequila Julep
3 oz.silver-style tequila
10 mint leaves
1 1/2 tsp extra fine sugar
Seltzer
Crushed ice
Mint sprig
Place mint leaves in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass or julep cup
and add sugar. Crush with muddler or wooden spoon until the leaves
begin to come apart. Add a splash of seltzer, fill glass 3/4 full with
crushed ice, and add tequila. Top with another splash of seltzer, stir,
and garnish with mint sprig.
